A non-cheese event : the Maine Celtic Celebration
July 22, 2012: For over 15 years I have played an instrument known as the bones which are an ancient percussion instrument. I make my own bones from beef ribs and decorate them using the sailor's art of scrimshaw. Bones are one of the earliest documented instruments, appearing in Egyptian heiroglyphs.
The instrument moved from sea to shore in the mid 1800s, first becoming popular during the Minstrelsy period in the United States, then moving to Ireland and the Celtic cultures, where they became quite widespread as a percussion instrument.
This coming Sunday, July 22 at 2:00 p.m., I will teach a bones playing workshop at the Maine Celtic Celebration in Belfast, ME. It is a free festival with 2 stages of music, workshops, food and fun! http://www.mainecelticcelebration.com/
